What is Ambien?
Ambien is a sedative, or hypnotic. Sleep problems (insomnia) may be caused by unbalanced brain chemicals caused by zolpidem.
Insomnia can be treated with Ambien. You take the immediate-release tablet right before you go to bed to help you fall asleep. Ambien CR comes in extended-release form with a first layer that dissolves quickly to help you fall asleep, and a second layer that dissolves slowly to keep you sleeping.

Ambien may cause severe allergic reactions. If you experience any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, stop taking this medicine and get emergency medical attention.
Do not share Ambien with anyone, even if they have the same symptoms as you. Men and women require different doses of Zolpidem, and children are not allowed to take this drug. Side effects can be dangerous if this medication is misused.
It is possible for Ambien to impair your thinking or reactions. After taking this medicine, you might still feel sleepy in the morning, especially if you take the extended-release tablet or if you are a woman. Do not do anything that requires you to be awake and alert until you have waited at least 4 hours or until you are fully awake.
Ambien should never be taken in larger amounts or for longer than prescribed.
If you consume alcohol during the day or just before bed, you should not take zolpidem.
